DGR : Reflecting on Life, Love and What Matters

Friday 5th Apr 2024

It’s been a tough year, losing friends and family.

Close calls hit hard during the first quarter of 2024 as well … things that make you take stock and reflect on the value of life and the love of those around you.

Why have I donated time, skills -- my photography, graphics, editorial and fundraising efforts -- every year to the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride for more than a decade? It's a complicated mélange of happiness, grief, friendships, and wanting to be part of an event that not only puts a positive light on the motorcycle community, but also -- with the help of Movember -- strives to do good in the world, raising funds for prostate cancer research and education as well as men's mental health resources worldwide.

I have made many close, lasting friendships through DGR in LA, NYC and Sydney, Australia; I have discovered through conversations around the event, what friends have gone through: cancer survivors and those that deal with depression on a daily basis. And then there are those we have lost over the past 12 years.

Every ride ... in my headspace ... I dedicate my efforts to people who are always in my thoughts ... this year is no different, and the list gets longer.

In LA there is Tammy Hilton from Deus (who helped tremendously with the LA DGR) but sadly lost her struggle with depression. Her smile and kindness are missed, always. And stellar DGR fundraiser and fellow Triumph enthusiast, Tim Flynn, who lost his hard-fought battle with cancer. His sheer will is something I will always remember.

In New York, last year we lost NY Classic Riders veteran David Douck, who had been asked to be a co-ride leader for the 2023 event. I was looking forward to working with him & getting to know someone who so many NYC riders knew and respected.

And my friend and photographic colleague Mark Squitieri, who took some incredibly memorable DGR shots over the years. Mark is still suffering from the effects of an aneurysm from 2020. I miss his satiric Long Island humor and his willingness to go out of his way for friends.

Finally I’ll be thinking of my recently passed father-in-law, a veteran police motor officer who was also always quick to lend a hand where needed. Generosity is its own reward.

Thank you to those who have sponsored me in past years.  I hope to again contribute to the cause, building on the +$14K I’ve raised thus far.

On Sunday the 19th of May 2024, I'm riding my modified Triumph Thruxton in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride here in NYC with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men's mental health resources on behalf of Movember.

Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
